Dr Anna Hutchens has over 15 years’ experience in research management and academic career development. A PhD graduate from the Australian National University (ANU). Anna is a published author and has won competitive category 1 postdoctoral fellowships prior to leveraging her success and expertise to coach, mentor and train other academics in getting funded and advancing their careers. Within the University sector she has provided specialist advice to applicants, designing programs to support academic staff to win grants, tailor pitches to external audiences as well as since 2018, helping academics plan for and communicate about the real-world impact of their research. She has successfully developed strategic grant support programs in these areas and coordinated their institutional roll out, including large scale initiatives such as Centres of Excellence.
Anna has worked as a consultant to other Australian organisations seeking to extend the relevance and utility of high quality research and researchers’ careers, including Research Coaching Australia, and the Digital Health Co-operative Research Centre (DHCRC), where she is the Education and Workforce Program’s Coach to the DHCRC’s emerging research leaders.
Anna excels in helping academics with non-technical communication of their research, plan for impact, and pitch research program ideas to external investors. In the DHCRC context, she’s provided strategic grant writing support to teams with projects ranging from $50K to $2.175 million, enabling over 50 DHCRC researchers to secure over $5 million in funding.
