Professor Liz Sonenberg

Liz Sonenberg, Emeritus Professor at The University of Melbourne, retired from full time work in 2026, following a long career as an experienced university leader, board director and researcher in artificial intelligence. Her various experiences in leadership roles and as an active researcher and supervisor have allowed Liz to accrue an in-depth understanding of the complex workings and nature of Australian universities, while also navigating successes and disappointments through the national research funding system.
In her most recent position, Pro Vice Chancellor (Systems Innovation) at the University of Melbourne, Liz contributed to university-wide technology planning and investment. Earlier PVC responsibilities included facilitation of interdisciplinary research across the University. She also previously served as Head of the Department of Information Systems and Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Liz has been involved in advisory and review committees of a variety of multi-institutional centres and served on the boards of several major State and Commonwealth government funded research infrastructure initiatives. Since 2023 she has been the Chair of the National Research Infrastructure Advisory Group that advises the Commonwealth Department of Education on research infrastructure planning.
