Rick Middleton has a long standing career as an academic in Electrical Engineering and Applied mathematics. He has been involved in successive ARC Research Centres including as director, plus director of an ARC training centre. He has had multiple appointments on the ARC College of Experts, on the ARC Medical Research Advisory Committee and on European Research Council Starting Grant (PE7) Selection Committees (2018, 2020, 2022 (chair), and 2024 (chair). He is a former president of the IEEE Control Systems Society (2011) and Head of School of Electrical Engineering and Computing (2015-2021). He is a fellow of IEEE, IFAC and AAS. He has a range of interests in theory and applications of Systems and Control theory, including telecommunications, systems biology, power systems and smart grids, networked dynamical systems, and power electronics.
