Professor Kerry Carrington
SENIOR ASSOCIATE
In 2022, after retiring from full-time academic work, I was appointed an Adjunct Professor in the School of Law and Society at the University of Sunshine Coast and joined Outside Opinion as a Senior Associate. I have been a mentor coach at Envisage since 2017 and have extensive experience helping academics advance their careers.
Over the past 35 years, I have held various leadership positions, including Head of School and Deputy Chair of Academic Board. I have led 8 Australian Research Grants totalling $1.5 million and published extensively, including 13 books, 140 journal articles and book chapters. My work has been cited 6,500 times on Google Scholar.
As a scholar, I have built a wide-ranging international and national network that challenges the dominance of knowledge from English-speaking countries in the global north. This network is passionate about promoting open publishing in open-access journals as a strategic way to democratise knowledge and bridge global divides. This was the driving motivation for serving as the founding editor of the International Journal of Crime, Justice and Social Democracy, a successful gold-star open-access journal that is free to publish and access. I serve on the editorial boards of 10 journals, three of which are published in Spanish and seven in English.
I am comfortable working with multi-disciplinary teams across Law, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work, Geography, Journalism, Psychology and Criminology. I specialise in gender-based violence and its prevention, but I have a broad range of research interests spanning gender studies, sociology, criminology, law, and juvenile justice.
Throughout my career, I have honed the ability to translate complex academic research into concise briefing papers for a diverse audience. Additionally, I have converted my research findings into submissions for Parliament and government inquiries to promote their adoption. I believe this skill has been a key factor in my success in the tertiary sector, where I have successfully leveraged ARC grants and consultancies while building an extensive network across the government, justice, and NGO sectors.
