Prof Kerry Carrington

Professor Kerry Carrington

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Kerry Carrington is Adjunct Professor at the University of Sunshine Coast.

My 35-year career spans working in the Australian Parliament as a senior research officer, heading a unit within a statutory authority at AIHW, and several decades in the tertiary sector. Over this time, I have crafted the art of translating complex academic research into short briefing papers for a wide end user audience.  I also translate my research into submissions to Parliament and Government Inquiries to ensure greater take up of findings. I regard this as a key ingredient in my success in the tertiary sector in leveraging ARC Grants, Consultancies, and building a wide network in the government, justice and NGO sectors. This has been recognised by ARC ERA 2018 rating my research impact as HIGH.

I am comfortable working with multi-disciplinary teams across Law, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work, Geography, Journalism, Psychology and Criminology. I specialise in the fields of gender violence and its prevention.

As a scholar I have a wide international and national network that works collaboratively to disrupt the dominance of knowledge from the English-speaking countries by bridging global divides.  The global sale of knowledge through journals locked behind pay walls disadvantages many in the global south. I am passionate about establishing and promoting open publishing and open science as a strategic way of levelling the playing field and democratising knowledge. I am also a promoter of translation, have translated articles from Spanish to English, and am on the editorial boards of several journals published in Spanish, and another 7 in English.

At the age of 60 I retired from full time work in the academic sector to become a Director of my own research consultancy. I still have two active ARC DP grants which I now lead as an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore, where I went to primary and High School. This is a legacy project.

I have a diverse skill set in: Leadership; career mentoring; grant writing; publication; applied research skills; evaluation research skills; building networks with key stake-holders and end-users of research; statistical analysis; high end writing skills; public speaking; blog writing and social media skills.

I am competent in two languages: Spanish and English.
