Prof David Brown

Emeritus Professor David Brown

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Emeritus Professor David Brown taught Criminal Law, Advanced Criminal Law, Criminal Justice, Crime Prevention, Community Corrections and Penology courses at the University of NSW in Sydney from 1974 to 2008. He is lead co-author of the major and innovative Criminal Laws (1990), (2nd edn 1996), (3rd edn 2001) (4th edn 2006) (5th edn 2011) (6th edn 2015) (7th edn 2020) which has become the premier student teaching text in criminal law in universities in NSW. He is very widely published across the broad areas of criminal law, criminal justice, criminology and penology, both in Australia and internationally. His co-authored or co-edited books include: Youth Justice and Penality in Comparative Context (2021); Justice Reinvestment: Winding Back Imprisonment (2016); Penal Culture and Hyperincarceration (2013); The New Punitiveness (2005); Prisoners as Citizens (2002); Rethinking Law and Order (1998); Death in the Hands of the State (1988); The Judgments of Lionel Murphy (1986); and The Prison Struggle (1982). He has co-authored or co-edited 16 books; published 46 chapters in books, and over 140 articles in journals and in conference proceedings published; and given over 160 conference papers or public addresses all over the world. Since 2008 he has been involved in five successful ARC Discovery Project applications.
