SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Stephen Buckman is an Emeritus Professor in Atomic Physics at the Australian National University. His research interests have been in electron spectroscopy and electron collision physics, antimatter (positron) interactions with matter, cold atom physics, and applications of electron and positron collisions in a range of everyday technological and biological applications.

Some of Steve’s career highlights include:

• Fulbright Senior Scholar, University of California, San Diego, 2000-2001

• Lead CI and Centre Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Antimatter Studies, 2006 – 2012

• Director, Research School of Physics and Engineering, ANU, 2012–15

• Member, Board of Directors, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), 2015 – 2023

• Chair, Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) Physical Sciences Panel, 2015

• Executive Director for Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering and IT at the Australian Research Council from 2016-18. Responsible at various times for Discovery, Linkage Projects, Laureate Fellowship, Linkage Infrastructure and Special Research Initiative Schemes

• Order of Australia (AM) for Service to Science, 2013

• Fellow of the American Physical Society, The Institute of Physics UK and the Australian Institute of Physics

• Published 230+ refereed journal articles and book chapters on atomic collision/antimatter physics and electron spectroscopy

• Extensive experience in mentoring and advising applicants for research funding at all levels. Chief Investigator on multiple ARC and other agency grants

• Extensive experience in scientific/research administration; research metrics; international scientific collaboration; research funding strategies; participation in research review panels.
