Professor Robert Vincent

Robert (Bob) Vincent is Professor Emeritus, Physics, School of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of Adelaide. His primary field of research includes the development and application of systems to study atmospheric and ionospheric processes, including the development of hardware, software, and conceptual techniques for data analysis. Bob is particularly involved in experimental studies of the dynamics and meteorology of the lower and upper atmosphere using ground-a variety of techniques, including radars, lidars and balloons, together with applications in the space sciences. A secondary area of interest is the investigation natural and fugitive emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane.

Bob has published over 250 papers in international and national peer reviewed journals and served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. He was a Highly Cited researcher (top 0.5% by citations in the Geosciences), Institute for Scientific Information, and has held numerous visiting appointments at a senior level in research organisations in Germany, Japan, France and the United States.

Bob was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2004 and is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Australian Institute of Physics. In 2017, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) awarded for distinguished service to science and education.

Other career highlights include:
- Vice-President and President of the Scientific Committee on Solar Terrestrial Physics. SCOSTEP is an ICSU body responsible for the organisation and promotion of long-term interdisciplinary programs in sun-earth interactions (1999-2011).
- Member, Physics, Chemistry and Geoscience Expert Advisory Committee, Australian Research Council (2002-2004).
- Member, 2010 ARC Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences panel evaluating research excellence (ERA).
- Chair, 2012 Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences ERA panel.
- Chair of the Australian National Committee on Antarctic Research (2005-2010).
- Member, Antarctic Science Advisory Board (2005-2010).
- Member, National Committee on Space Science (2005-2008).
