Workshops (blog style)

Outside Opinion offers a comprehensive range of workshops, mentoring programs and retreats on grant development, research and academic capacity building, strategic planning, writing and publishing and leadership across the higher education sector. 

All workshops can be tailored to focus on a specific grant scheme, discipline group or academic career stage.
Workshops may be run face-to-face or online, with breakout exercises and peer-to-peer engagement in either mode.

Cohort Based Researcher Development Program (Mid-Career Researchers)

Workshop

Multiple possible Senior Associate presenters
Length: 3 x 1.5 hour workshops and 4 x 1 hour mentoring sessions

This program is designed to develop the research planning capacity of a cohort of mid-career researchers  It will involve a combination of cohort work identifying challenges and opportunities in the current research environment and 1:1 support for each participant.

Activities will include:

  • Cohort work establishing an understanding of the research environment, cutting edge developments in the field or fields and opportunities for new fundamental and applied research directions supported by external investment.

  • Development by each participant, supported by a mentor, of a three year research plan, with aims, goals and commitments to action by definite dates.

  • Presentation by each participant to peers and Faculty leadership of a program of research work. The aim in each case will be to build international reputation, influence and standing.

  • Implementation planning, in which participants in this cohort support one another in taking steps to meet their goals. 

Workshop 1. Outside Opinion facilitator will meet with participants and discuss the rationale for the initiative, the process and the work ahead.

Workshop 2. Participants will be asked to comment on: their challenge and goals; their field: who is the best in the world and who do they want to work with and influence? ideas for projects, partners and publications; what is needed for this to happen. Each person will speak to the material they have developed and respond to supportive challenge questions from the facilitator and the group. The facilitator will discuss how these aspirations can be shaped into plans, using models, tools and examples

Workshop 4. Participants will meet as a cohort with OO facilitator to practice presenting their five year plan and core publications, project and partnerships, with feedback from peers and facilitator. Participants will present their plans and nominated projects and partnerships to a School or Faculty panel, and will be given feedback.

Workshop 5. OO facilitator will hold a meeting with the participants and discuss any changes to strategic goals, new initiatives and how their implementation plans are tracking. Participants will be asked to circulate summaries and plans to the group ahead of the meeting.

Mentoring: Each participant will receive 4 one-hour 1:1 mentoring and planning sessions from Outside Opinion senior associates. Mentors will set work to be done for each session, guiding researcher to clarify challenges, identify obstacles, find solutions and pitch their developing plan.  Participants may choose to focus on a various areas including: a personal research career plan;  a grant outline, a publication plan, exhibition or creative work plan, an industry partnership plan, a strategic plan for a centre or group.
