Rosemary Kennedy

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Dr Rosemary Kennedy is an expert in place-based climate-responsive architecture and urban design research. She formerly led the Centre for Subtropical Design at QUT, and established the international SubTropical Cities conference series in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in the USA. She has authored over 70 publications influencing public policy, including the landmark "Subtropical Design in South East Queensland" addressing regional climate, landscape and lifestyle values while considering climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation. She has held an Australian Research Council linkage grant as a key member of a transdisciplinary team investigating the social, economic and environmental impacts of inner urban high density living. She was awarded the AIA’s inaugural Dunbar Fellowship for her project “Next Generation Apartment Buildings” to study the professional practices of innovative architects in South East Asian mega-cities who are breaking the generic mould for residential towers. She has extensive experience as design reviewer for major urban development proposals and urban policies in Australia and overseas.

Rosemary currently leads a built environment design consultancy specialising in design-led practical outcomes for government and industry. Projects range from developing planning scheme policy to design guidelines for sustainable public spaces, high-rise residential buildings, resilience and post disaster reconstruction, senior living environments and longevity by design. Her activities are characterised by diversity and ‘reach’ across diverse disciplines, and impact in contributing relevant local and regional solutions to global issues. She is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects. She has served as an elected member of the AIA’s Queensland Chapter Council, and has served on national design juries, including as Queensland Chair of Juries.
