Associate Professor Pritinder Kaur

Senior Associate

Associate Professor Pritinder Kaur has an international profile as a stem cell biologist with expertise in skin regeneration, wound repair, epithelial cancers, skin biology, regenerative medicine and functional genomics. She has 30 years experience running independent research labs at the Hanson Centre of Cancer Research, Adelaide; Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne; Curtin University, Perth funded by competitive grants and fellowships.

Pritinder is an epithelial stem cell biologist with research interests in tissue renewal, wound repair and cancer. Her laboratory has used predominantly human skin as a model epithelium but findings in this tissue can be extended to many other epithelia including oesophageal, gastrointestinal and ovarian tissues. Her primary research interests focus on understanding the cellular and molecular interactions between epithelial stem cells and their immediate mesenchymal microenvironment - an interaction that drives homeostatic cell replacement. Disruption of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions occur during injury and cancer - an understanding of these perturbations provides insights into the development of proliferative diseases, ageing and carcinogenesis.

Extensive experience in pre-submission grant reviews and grant assessment including: member of multiple NHMRC GRPs (2009-2018); Cancer Council of Western Australia Project Grant Review Panel (2017); National Stem Cell Foundation Grant Reviewer (2019-2021).

Experience in writing: high quality publications for top-tier journals (PNAS-USA, J Clin Invest, J Cell Biol, Stem Cells, Lancet); and Category 1 grants and fellowships from NHMRC, Cancer Councils, NIH, MRFF, philanthropic agencies; industry partners.

Experienced in writing grants and reports for international industry sponsored grants (Organogenesis Inc, Boston, USA; L’Oreal, Paris, France; Smith-Nephew, Austin, USA; Unilever, UK); interacting with industry partners Florey Fellow (1990-1994); NHMRC Research Fellow (2008-2013); Life Fellow of the UICC (2005-present)
