Senior Associate

Michael Bartos is a writer and researcher in public health and ethics. He was lead editor for the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, which reported to the World Health Assembly in May 2021. He is Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Sociology at Australian National University.

  • Fondation Brocher (Switzerland) residency in 2017 on a framework for posthuman bioethics.

  • Country Director for the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) in Zimbabwe (2013-2016) and Central America (2004-2007)

  • Team leader for HIV prevention and care, and strategy and innovation, UNAIDS Geneva 2007-2013

  • Senior policy advisor and speechwriter, UNAIDS, Geneva, 2000-2004

  • Agenda setting publications in the Lancet, Nature, Science and other leading journals.

  • Research Fellow in the Australian National HIV Social Research Centre, LaTrobe University and Macquarie University. CI on ARC and Commonwealth AIDS Research Grants projects on masculinity and risk, Aboriginal men’s constructs of risk and health, and WHO quality of life instruments.

  • Extensive collaborations with World Health Organization, United Nations agencies, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and international NGOs in areas of public health responses, and investment approaches to public health threats.

  • Extensive experience in strategy and communication products for high level decision makers in both Australian and global health contexts.

  • Since returning to Australia in mid-2017, Michael has been based in south western Victoria, where he has been appointed to the Board of the district hospital and collaborated with the local shire and the town's business development committee on strategies for improving well-being and economic development.
