Dr Jon Cox

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Jon specialises in research (grant) funding and proposal development, and has two decades of experience helping leading Universities and UN specialised agencies secure competitive grants. At Oxford (2007-18), he led the University to a first ranked position in European Research Council awards (14 awards, valued at c. 25m EUR) over a decade in physical climate science.

Jon has also worked for the University of Copenhagen, where he supported the Faculty of Social Sciences to strengthen and broaden its portfolio of EU research consortia and awards, across a range of European Commission programmes, focusing on developing projects bridging social and physical sciences – especially around the politics of climate governance, maritime/oceanic security and ethics, and sustainability studies.

Most recently Jon has spent five years working both as consultant and permanent staff for UN specialised agencies – the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Bonn, and the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva. As part of the Science and Innovation team at WMO, he managed the funding strategy for the Agency’s three global climate and weather research programmes, securing support from Horizon Europe, multi-lateral banks, and philanthropic donors.

Through his own practice, Oxford Editorial, Jon continues to support academics and research teams internationally with grant writing, proposal editing, and communications. He has worked across a wide range of disciplines, with a focus on making complex science accessible and competitive in international funding contexts.

Jon has a Masters and Doctorate in Earth Sciences from the University of Oxford. He continues to publish, with a 2024 Nature co-authored article on the use of AI techniques in disaster risk reduction science as a recent highlight. He has also co-edited several major reports for UNCCD (such as the Global Land Outlook, 2022) and WMO.

Jon moved from Europe to Melbourne in 2025.
