Professor Joanne Tomkins

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Joanne Tompkins has extensive experience with research and research development. She has been a head of a large school, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Queensland, and, for three years, Executive Director for Humanities and Creative Arts at the Australian Research Council (2017-2020). Her expertise is primarily in Theatre Studies but she has a strong grasp of humanities and creative arts research across the country. Her own research engages with digital humanities: she is a founding member of AusStage and has been involved with AustLit. She started the company, Ortelia, which provides visualisation and modelling services to galleries and museums, and which underpins her current research in visualising historical theatres that no longer exist. She has received numerous ARC DP, LP, and LIEF grants, has been on the College of Experts, has served on the Humanities and Creative Arts panel for ERA in 2015 and is currently an international member of the Humanities panel of the UK’s REF assessment exercise.

She has edited several journals, and the Australasian Drama Studies Association has named an editing prize after her. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Humanities; the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Queen Mary, University of London; and an executive committee member for the International Federation for Theatre Research.
