Professor Gillian (Jill) Wigglesworth FAHA has expertise in linguistics and applied linguistics as well as language testing and assessment and focuses specifically on the language of Indigenous children who live in remote areas of Australia where English is not generally the language of the community. She was Inaugural Director of the Research Unit for Indigenous Language at the University of Melbourne from 2013 to 2015 and a Chief Investigator of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (2013-2022) where she led the Learning program across the Centre. She has successfully completed multiple ARC Discovery grants and continues to contribute to the University of Melbourne as Professor Emerita in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. She is currently working on two projects, one with Indigenous children in a bilingual school, and another with audiologists who are assessing both the hearing health and language development of Indigenous children as they enter the school system. She has extensive experience in senior roles at the university including as Head of School, Associate Dean Research in the Faulty of Arts and Deputy Dean of Arts. She was a member of the ARC College of Experts from 2011-2013 and sat on the Laureate panel from 2022-2023.
