Professor Geoff Fincher FAATSE, FAAS, AO

Emeritus Professor, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, University of Adelaide. PhD in Biochemistry, University of Melbourne. 

Geoff moved to the University of Adelaide in 1993, where he took up the position of Professor of Plant Science followed by a number of research leadership roles:

  • Founding Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls (2011 – 2014)

  • Cluster Leader of the CSIRO Food Futures Flagship on ‘High Fibre Grains’ (2011 – 2013)

  • Deputy CEO of the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (2003 – 2010)

  •  Director of the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide (2003 – 2010)

  • Consultant to the Carlsberg Research Laboratory in Copenhagen (2015 -2019).

Geoff’s research interests are focused on the molecular genetics, cell biology and biochemistry of cell wall polysaccharide synthesis, and cell wall re-modelling and degradation in cereals and grasses. His academic honours include:

  • 2013 Thomas Burr Osborne Medal of the American Association of Cereal Chemists International, awarded for distinguished contributions in the field of cereal chemistry

  • 2010 elected Corresponding Member, American Society of Plant Biology

  •   2014 elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering

  • 2016 elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science

  •  2017 Order of Australia Award (AO) awarded for distinguished service to science, and to education, in the area of plant genomics, as an academic, researcher and administrator, through scientific advisory roles, and to international professional societies
