Prof Erica James

Professor Erica James

Senior Associate

Erica James has more than 25 years experience in higher education, most recently as Professor of Public Health, and Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) at the University of Newcastle. Her contribution to public health education and research was recognised by her award as Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Erica transitioned from academia to industry in 2021 and is currently Performance and Evaluation Lead at Cancer Council NSW.

Erica holds a PhD in Behavioural Science in Relation to Medicine, has published >100 peer reviewed papers and obtained >$10.4M in research and consultancy income. As immediate past chair of the International Society for Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) Special Interest Group in Cancer Prevention and Management, Erica has significant experience in behaviour change research, and partnering with industry end users (specifically NGOs) to enhance research translation.

An awarded educator, Erica is experienced in assisting early career educators to engage in scholarship of teaching and learning. She is well placed to assist in preparation for external accreditation, program and curriculum reviews, development of new curricula, and establishment of quality assurance processes. As a former member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions of Australasia (CAPHIA), she has led several initiatives to improve public health education and research across Australasia.
