SENIOR ASSOCIATE

David McCallum is Professor Emerita of Sociology at Victoria University, Melbourne. 

David's research and publications are in the fields of historical sociology and the sociology of law. His most recent publication is Criminalizing Children. Welfare and the State in Australia, published in 2018 in the Cambridge University Press series Cambridge Studies in Law and Society. He has been the holder of an ARC Research Grant on the relations of criminality and personality disorder.  

Prior teaching and research experience includes the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne (1976-85), along with regular international research experience in historical sociology with the University of London, the Centre for the Sociology of Law at Onati, and Durham University Faculty of Law. 

Teaching and research includes graduate and post-graduate teaching in education, humanities and the social sciences, including the sociology of health, sociology of education, law and society, and the history of the human sciences. Current research activities include Australian Indigenous history of law, policing and intergenerational trauma, and Editor in Chief of a Handbook on History of Human Sciences for Palgrave Macmillan.
