Prof Alan Carey

Honorary Professor Alan Carey

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Alan Carey is an Honorary Professor at the Mathematical Sciences Institute, ANU.

His main research interest is in the mathematics of quantum systems including the related fields of functional analysis and geometry. Alan’s recent research has been on topological properties of quantum systems and the mathematical questions posed by the difficulty of extracting this kind of information using analysis of differential operators in particular and more generally via the theory of operator algebras.

His publications have appeared in leading journals on mathematical physics and mathematics more generally. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Noncommutative Geometry and Reviews in Mathematical Physics.  He won an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Research Award in 2010, two Clay Mathematics Institute Research Awards and held numerous visiting appointments at the Erwin Schroedinger Institute for Mathematics and Physics at the University of Vienna, the Hausdorff Institute for Mathematics at the University of Bonn, the Clay Mathematics Institute as well as many other mathematical research centres and institutes.  He has been a funded visitor to many universities, notably Oxford, Princeton, Harvard, Bonn, KTH (Stockholm) and the University of Helsinki.  He held an ARC Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award from 2013 to 2015. Alan was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2013.

Alan is a former President of the Australian Mathematical Society, Dean of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide and Director of the Mathematical Sciences institute at ANU.  He has previously served on various ARC panels and held ARC grants continuously since 1985.
