Prof Gabrielle Meagher

senior ASSOCIATE

Gabrielle Meagher is Professor Emerita in the School of Social Sciences at Macquarie University. Before joining Macquarie University in 2015, she was Professor of Social Policy and Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Doctoral Studies in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. Gabrielle also held several joint and honorary appointments in the Department of Social Work at Stockholm University from 2009 to 2021.

Gabrielle trained as a political economist and she has broad familiarity with theoretical frames across the social, economic and political sciences. She has used qualitative, quantitative and document-based research methods in projects on a wide variety of topics in labour studies and social policy. She has co-convened national and international interdisciplinary networks of social policy researchers, which have created opportunities for early career researchers and resulted in many edited collections and journal special issues. Her research on paid care work has informed her expert testimony in equal remuneration cases in state and federal jurisdictions.

Gabrielle has extensive experience in peer review of research in editorial roles with national and international journals, and in membership and chairing of committees to evaluate university-level grants for postdoctoral fellowships and other competitively allocated internal funding, in addition to grant assessment for the Australian Research Council.

Enhancing the quality of research education has been a special interest of Gabrielle’s for more than two decades. She has designed a wide variety of programs to support students across their candidatures and beyond, from induction into doctoral programs to publishing from their research. She has also worked on process improvements in doctoral administration, from confirmation of candidature to integrity in examinations.
